The recently founded ensemble Terrea offers an exciting perspective and a fresh take on the music of Western Asia, particularly the rich musical traditions of Iran. The ensemble features the Claviton, a microtonal keyboard with 31 keys per octave, specially designed by musician and instrument maker Georg Vogel. This innovative instrument enables composer Amir Ahmadi to reinterpret Iranian and Arabic Dastgah and Maqam music in entirely new ways, particularly with regard to microtonality and tonal systems.
With the expertise of Sarvin Hazin, a violinist proficient in both European classical and Iranian traditional music, and the intricate techniques and emotional depth of cellist Anna Maria Niemiec, the trio navigates skillfully between jazz, fusion, traditional, and contemporary music. Terrea succeeds in weaving this diversity into a cohesive whole, transcending conventional boundaries.
