Widad Mjama and Khalil Epi explore the fascinating, orally transmitted Moroccan tradition of "Aïta" - a form of musical expression by women (Chikhates) that dates back to the 12th century. Aïta means "cry" in Moroccan dialect and embodies both the call of warriors and the sensual lament of love.
Seba Kayan is exploring the Kurdish tradition of Dengbêj, a musical form of storytelling, in her search for sound. For various sound installations and her music project Carpet Concert, she uses old Dengbêj recordings by her grandmother Gare, who comes from Dêrsim and has passed on the tradition. Seba Kayan also brings oral history to life in a new context and talks about her approach in this interview.
In conversation with Ruby Sircar, artist and lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts, the artists talk about their research and their approach to placing this socially highly relevant oral history in a new context.
We will end the evening in the festival center with food, chatting and listening to music.
